One of the oldest university observatory in Ukraine since 1845. In the observatory worked at various times such prominent scholars as V. Fedorov (first director), M. Handrykov, I. Putilin, A. Yakovkin D. Pyaskovskyy, S. Saints, A. Bogorodsky and others. The staff of the Observatory discovered two comets (Churyumov-Gerasimenko, in 1969 and Churyumov – Solodovnikova, 1986), discovered and investigated 600 new dwarf galaxies, the parameters nehabblivskyh large-scale motions of galaxies, the influence of gravitational lensing on observational characteristics of space objects created a series of catalogs provisions vision and extragalactic radio sources, the theory of luminescence of prominences, coronal holes discovered role in generating solar wind, the generalized theory of meteor phenomena grounded scientific concept of asteroid-meteor danger.
